Once again Rainey Media found itself traveling all over Norfolk County collecting footage of the community and it’s talented residents. It was the first Norfolk County shoot of 2013 so we were very excited to get our hands dirty. We started the day off early at Chambers Pancake House where we were greeted by the early morning sun (which was a nice break of the non-stop rain). It was the first chance we’ve had to set up and experiment with our new Mini-Jib and lights. This new gear allowed us to be more creative with the camera and get some interesting shots and improve the quality of our product. Inside the pancake house we found ourselves in the middle of a busy breakfast hotspot filled with pancake connoisseurs from all over the County and a super friendly staff who were ready to help. We had some friends (Stu and Amy McLaren) come out to be our talent for they morning, they also brought Marla their 2 year old daughter. She was great on camera especially once she got a hold of some pancakes and maple syrup!
Our next visit was with a local metal sculptor and painter named Alec Godden. He was incredibly friendly and full of stories, not to mention a natural on camera. He showed us his workshop and gave us a quick tutorial on how he goes about making his creations. He also explained to us that at 81 years old he always keeps busy because as soon as you stop moving, that’s when you get old. From here we went to the Simcoe Little Theatre where insanity ensued.
It was the first matinee of their latest production Noises Off (check out the promo here) so everyone was everywhere! It was interesting to get to go “behind the scenes” and see what goes on when the actors are off stage (especially during this crazy play). It was a pretty tight fit with everyone running around so we kept the gear to a minimum and tried to stay in the shadows.
Our final stop was at a local pottery called The Raging Bowl where we met up with Melissa Schooley. She’s a very talented potter who ran us through the steps of creating a piece (in this case it was a bowl) and we captured it all on camera. With her years of experience she made it look incredibly simple to “throw a bowl” but I’m fairly certain it’s much harder than it looks.
It was a long day but we came away with some pretty excellent footage. It was great to get out in Norfolk County once again and speak with the local artists and businesses. We look forward to getting back out there and seeing even more.
